Stone Bathtub Shapes & Sizes: How to Choose the Right Fit

Compact stone soaking bathtub hand-carved from Indian Carrara marble by Stone Atelier By SKL

Choosing a natural stone bathtub starts with two questions that are easy to underestimate: what shape suits the room, and what size will actually fit it comfortably. Unlike an acrylic tub picked from a catalogue, a stone bathtub is carved from a single block, so its shape and proportions are decided before the first cut and cannot be adjusted afterwards. This guide walks through the main stone bathtub shapes, the standard sizes we carve, and how to match a tub to your floor plan, so you can arrive at a consultation with a clear idea of what will work in your space.

Why Shape and Size Matter More in Stone

With a stone bathtub, shape and size drive almost everything else about the project. They set how much stone is needed from the block, how much the finished piece weighs, how it travels in its crate, and how it is carried into the room. A slightly longer or wider tub is not just a little larger in the bathroom; it is a noticeably heavier object to plan around. That is why we treat dimensions as the first design conversation, not the last.

The Main Stone Bathtub Shapes

Most stone bathtubs fall into three families. Each has its own character and suits a different kind of room.

Oval freestanding

The oval is the classic sculptural stone tub. Soft, continuous curves let the veining flow around the whole piece, and because it is finished on every side, it is meant to be seen from all angles. An oval works beautifully as the centrepiece of a larger bathroom or a primary suite, set in the middle of the floor or angled toward a window. It needs space around it to breathe, so it rewards generous rooms.

Rectangular

A rectangular stone tub has cleaner, more architectural lines. It sits comfortably against a wall or within an alcove and pairs naturally with contemporary interiors. Because it can be placed closer to walls, it often makes better use of a bathroom where floor space is valuable.

Corner

A corner tub is shaped to sit into a right angle, using two walls to frame it. This is a thoughtful choice for square rooms, or for layouts where the centre of the floor needs to stay clear for circulation. It keeps the tactile, solid-stone bathing experience while tucking the bath neatly out of the main walkway.

Standard Sizes We Carve

Every piece is made to order, but our two bathtub designs start from set proportions that suit most rooms. These are the published figures from our product pages.

Monolithic Stone Freestanding Bathtub

Our full-size freestanding oval is carved to a standard size of 1750 x 850 x 600 mm (roughly 69 x 33.5 x 23.5 inches, L x W x H). At this standard size it weighs approximately 340 kg and holds approximately 300 litres of water. It is designed with a gently sculpted interior for comfortable reclining, and rectangular and corner configurations can also be carved on request.

Compact Stone Soaking Bathtub

The compact tub has a standard length of 5 to 6 ft (approximately 1500 to 1800 mm) and comes in three standard configurations:

  • Oval freestanding: approx. 1525 x 1040 x 610 mm (60 x 41 x 24 inches)
  • Rectangular / alcove: approx. 1525 x 815 x 460 mm (60 x 32 x 18 inches)
  • Corner: approx. 1525 x 1525 x 560 mm (60 x 60 x 22 inches)

The smaller footprint comes from the exterior, not the bathing well. The interior is still hollowed to a deep soaking profile, so the experience of sinking into solid stone is unchanged. Weight and water capacity for the compact tub depend on the stone and final profile, and we confirm both at quotation. You can see both designs in our stone bathtubs collection.

How to Choose the Right Size for Your Bathroom

A few practical considerations will narrow the choice quickly.

Measure the room, not just the space for the tub. A freestanding stone tub looks its best with open floor around it, and you will want comfortable room to step in and out, clean around the base and reach the filler. Sketch the tub onto your floor plan along with doors, the vanity and the shower so you can see how people will move through the room.

Think about who will bathe. Taller bathers generally enjoy a longer interior for reclining, which points toward the full-size oval. If the tub is mainly for a relaxing soak rather than stretching out, a compact tub with its deep well can be just as satisfying in a smaller room.

Plan the path in. Stone arrives as one solid piece. Check doorways, corridors, stair turns and lift sizes on the way to the bathroom. We share crate dimensions and weight before delivery, so your contractor can confirm access well ahead of time.

Consider the floor early. Larger tubs are heavier, and a full tub adds the weight of water and bather on top. If the bathroom is above ground level, have your architect or structural engineer review the load. Our guide to stone bathtub weight and floor load explains what to ask.

Match shape to plumbing. A centre drain is standard on our tubs, with a corner drain available on request. If you are renovating rather than building new, let us know where your existing waste point sits so we can position the drain to suit.

When a Custom Size Makes Sense

The standard sizes are starting points, not limits. Because every tub is cut from a fresh block after your order is confirmed, length, width, depth and internal profile can all be set to your bathroom. Custom sizing is worth considering when you have an unusual alcove, a window line you want the tub to sit under, a hospitality project that needs a consistent footprint across several rooms, or simply a preference for a deeper or longer soak. Send us your floor plan and we will confirm the exact specification, finished weight and freight before production begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the standard size of a stone bathtub?

There is no single industry standard, but our full-size Monolithic Stone Freestanding Bathtub is carved to 1750 x 850 x 600 mm as standard. Our Compact Stone Soaking Bathtub starts at around 1525 mm long, in oval, rectangular or corner configurations.

Which stone bathtub shape is best for a small bathroom?

A compact rectangular or corner tub usually suits a smaller bathroom best, because it can sit against the walls and leave the floor clear. The compact oval also works if you have a little space around it and want a freestanding look.

Can you make a stone bathtub to my exact dimensions?

Yes. Every tub is made to order, so length, width, depth, internal profile and drain placement can be set to your space. Share your floor plan and we will confirm the specification before production.

How much does a full-size stone bathtub weigh?

Our standard Monolithic Stone Freestanding Bathtub weighs approximately 340 kg at 1750 x 850 x 600 mm. Weight varies with stone density and final size, so we confirm the exact finished weight for your chosen stone and dimensions before you order.

How much water does a stone bathtub hold?

Our standard freestanding oval holds approximately 300 litres. Capacity for the compact tub and for custom sizes depends on the internal profile, and we confirm it at quotation.

Does a smaller stone tub mean a shallower bath?

Not with our compact design. Its reduced footprint comes from the exterior, while the interior is still hollowed to a deep soaking profile.

How long does a custom-sized stone bathtub take?

Production runs 6 to 8 weeks from order confirmation, as every piece is made to order. Worldwide shipping with full crating and insurance typically adds 2 to 3 weeks in transit.

Can I choose a different finish for my tub?

Yes. Polished is our standard finish, and honed and leather finishes are available on request.
